Type 2 diabetes rarely announces itself. Blood sugar can drift upward for years without causing a single symptom you would notice, which is why so many people only find out after a routine blood test. The good news is that the test is quick, it is inexpensive, and catching a rising number early gives you real options while those options still work best.
At Synergy Medical Group in Gainesville, diabetes screening is a normal part of primary care. It usually adds only a few minutes to a visit you were already planning, and most insurance plans cover it as preventive care. Here is who should be tested, what the visit looks like, and what your numbers actually mean.
Who should be screened for diabetes?
Most national guidelines now recommend that adults begin routine screening around age 35, even with no symptoms at all. Your provider may suggest starting earlier, or repeating the test more often, if any of the following apply to you:
- A parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
- Carrying extra weight, particularly around the midsection
- High blood pressure or high cholesterol
- A history of gestational diabetes or polycystic ovary syndrome
- Limited physical activity during most weeks
- African American, Hispanic, Native American, or Asian American heritage, all of which carry higher risk
Patients often ask whether staying active lets them skip the test. Regular movement genuinely lowers your risk, and it is one of the most useful things you can do. It does not erase family history or age, though, so screening is still worth the few minutes it takes.
What to expect at your screening visit
The most common test is a hemoglobin A1C, a single blood draw that reflects your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. It does not require fasting, so you do not have to schedule around breakfast or rearrange your workday. Your provider may instead order a fasting glucose test or a glucose tolerance test depending on your history.
While you are in the office, we typically check blood pressure, review your current medications, and talk through anything that has changed since your last visit. If you are already coming in for a physical or another routine appointment, screening can almost always be added the same day. You can see the full list of what we handle in the office on our services page.
Results generally come back within a few days. We call you either way, whether the number is reassuring or not.
What your results mean
A1C results fall into three ranges. Below 5.7 percent is considered normal. Between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes. A result of 6.5 percent or higher suggests diabetes, and your provider will confirm it with a second test before making a diagnosis.
A prediabetes result is not a diagnosis of diabetes, and it is not something to panic about. It is an early warning with a genuinely good track record of being reversed. Structured changes to eating patterns, activity, and sleep have been shown to meaningfully lower the chance of progressing to type 2 diabetes. The National Library of Medicine’s overview of prediabetes is a reliable place to read more between visits.
If your result does point to diabetes, the plan usually starts smaller than people expect. We look at medication only when it is warranted, set a realistic follow-up schedule, and coordinate any specialist care you need. Managing blood sugar well from the start is what protects your kidneys, eyes, nerves, and heart over the long run.
Care that follows you
Diabetes is not a one visit condition, and your care should not be either. Synergy Medical Group follows patients across every setting they encounter, so the provider who reviews your A1C is part of the same team that stays with you if your needs change. Continuity is the point. It is what keeps small numbers from quietly becoming big problems.
